The intersection of art and commerce

Circa 2017 - one smoky evening in The Bird’s ciggie garden, Rose KB was approached by a friend and asked to borrow money for a round. She reached for her credit card and told them to put it on Mummy’s Plastic. Like all great businesses, the name came first. 

With a degree in Arts Management and years of bookings under her studded belt, Rose made moves towards a multidisciplinary management empire. But nothing stuck. She mourned for the sweet dependence of an artist she could take to the top.

Then in 2018, Rose was asked to distract a group of arts philanthropists in a karaoke holding-room while the main gallery was being turned over, just meters away. She put down the clipboard and picked up the mic to MC. Feeling the warm beam of the spotlight on her face. The chaos, the catharsis. 

She looked in the mirror and saw… an artist of her very own, and she needed money.

Artist bio

Rose Kingdom-Barron is an artist and organiser based in Boorloo, on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja. 

Her relational practice moves between performance, social experiment and spectacle - fuelled by an observant eye, (ir)reverent pop-influenced riffing and a deep desire to connect. Whether this is concocting a cryptocurrency based on social capital, hosting a karaoke room for 24 hours straight, running non-monotonous speed-dating or developing an artist-run reality TV show on a boat.

Rose’s ongoing performance work, The Wetness, is a devotional practice to the slippery substance that makes up most of our bodies. The show debuted as a short piece in a Sydney hotel room in 2024, commended by Baz Lurhmann as “a simple idea, you gave it luminosity”. The Wetness was awarded the Sydney Fringe Touring Award (FRINGE WORLD 2026), nominated for Best Independent Production and Outstanding Experimental Production at the Performing Arts WA Awards (2025), and is set to tour Edinburgh Fringe in August 2026, marking her first full-length international presentation.

She has been making work and performing across the country since 2020, including The Queer Woodchop (prod. PONY EXPRESS; Liveworks 2025, NSW & MONA FOMA 2023, TAS), Girly Hour (commissioned by Audible Edge, 2025 in collaboration with Solly Frank, NSW), and ROSE [LIVE] (Emerging Artist of the Year, FRINGE WORLD 2024), as well as for platforms such as RISING Festival, The Blue Room Theatre, Brand X (NSW), Perth Festival and Fremantle’s 10 Nights in Port - alongside international comedy hovels, hotel rooms, gay saunas, office buildings, boats and an elevator.
